Paladins What's up with the servers?

    What's up with the servers?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 09:23 AM PDT

Due to COVID-19, there have been a lot more people playing Paladins over the past couple months and there's also been a drastic increase in internet usage with people stuck at home and/or working from home. There has also been a steep rise in the number of players encountering matches where their ping looks fine, but they're getting high packet loss which feels similar to having 1000+ ping, so I wanted to give a detailed explanation of the status for each region.

    Europe

When we started investigating reports back in March, we found overloaded internet nodes around our London and Amsterdam data centers, but we noticed no such issue around some temporary servers we stood up in Frankfurt. As such, we decided to try moving all of our server capacity from London and Amsterdam to Frankfurt. As soon as we did this, we found overloaded internet nodes around the Frankfurt data center. This lead us to the conclusion that we need to spread our servers across multiple data centers to at least reduce the chances of encountering overloaded internet nodes. We've continued to receive reports of laggy matches on every server across all data centers, but analyzing all of the matches being played on these servers, there are a lot more matches on each server that are not encountering lag than ones with lag. It would appear that there's intermittently too much internet traffic being routed through certain internet nodes leading to players encountering packet loss along the route to our data centers.

NOTE: EU experienced a 24 hour period of things being much worse on May 14th to 15th, details can be found here: https://forums.hirezstudios.com/paladins/topic/3605/to-our-champions-regarding-servers

    Southeast Asia

Over the past few years, numerous SEA players have intermittently experienced laggy matches which have been linked to various ISPs and/or overloaded internet nodes. Over the past couple months, more players have been consistently experiencing high packet loss during matches and our investigations have concluded there are more overloaded internet nodes than previously seen in that region. SEA seems to have a larger number of internet nodes spread throughout the region that are intermittently getting overloaded when compared to what we're seeing in EU.

    South America (aka Brazil)

This region is in a very similar state as SEA. This region has a history of intermittent laggy matches and it's been exacerbated by the increased internet traffic. Investigations have drawn us to similar conclusions of internet nodes spread throughout the region being intermittently overloaded.

    North America

Other than a bad data center and a few bad servers, NA hasn't experienced the same issues with overloaded internet nodes causing intermittent packet loss. I'm sure some players have experienced some issues here and there, but generally packet loss issues are not plaguing this region. To be crystal clear, we are using similar data centers and servers in NA that we use in other regions. This is not a situation where we're concentrating our efforts on this region. In fact, we've spent several times as many hours trying to investigate and resolve issues in EU and other regions than we have for NA.

NOTE: NA experienced the same issue as EU during a 24 hour period where things were much worse on May 14th to 15th, details can be found here: https://forums.hirezstudios.com/paladins/topic/3605/to-our-champions-regarding-servers

We know that our players are suffering and I've read plenty of comments saying that we simply don't care. This couldn't be further from the truth, but I honestly don't know what else we could possibly do to resolve this issue for you all. We don't control the internet nodes between your house/ISP and our data centers. We also can't change the route that your packets take from your house/ISP to our data center. If there's a bad node in the middle dropping packets and not pushing them along the route, it's simply not within our control to fix. I know that this isn't the answer that you came here looking for and I wish that I had a better answer, but know that we've done everything that we can think of to combat the increased internet congestion that COVID-19 has caused.

It is what must be done

Evil Mojo needs to bring back the punishment for dodging match. It's almost impossible to stream this game and even play matches in high elo.

    Posted: 18 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Currently there is no punishment for leaving competitive matches. You don't lose TP, you don't get a defeat in your match history and you can bypass the deserter's time out by restarting the game. For those who are unaware, with 300 viewers average, i'm currently one of the most watched Paladins Twitch streamer, others like Mittow, Mutu, Kronsz1 and Dinttick have been suffering from the same issue. We are forced to endure a one hour window only to play a max of 2 matches, that's because people keep dodging matches all the time, not to mention those who leave the match because they don't enjoy the map and/or doesn't get to pick the champion he or she wants to play. Streaming is our job, we've been complaining about this for a long time and hi-rez refuses to take an action. This is an extreme lack of respect with all of us and we cannot by any means wait two whole months to see a change. The game needs a Hotfix that will put and end to this issue, it is honestly becoming impossible to stream Paladins.

I hate these challenges so much. The quad and healing are easy enough, but the specific kill ones are just. . . bad.

    Surely this will help... somehow

There needs to be a minimum character level requirement of 10 in Ranked. End of story.

    Posted: 18 May 2020 08:29 PM PDT

Post will be short and sweet.

You dont unlock all legendary cards until level 8. Yet somehow you qualify to play ranked with a level 3?

This is a massive issue plaguing Paladins. A simple level 10 requirement could help negate people picking level 3 drogoz within the first 2 picks, like what happened to me earlier...over a skye AND Victor.

The only foreseeable problem I could see is if someone doesn't have whats needed at level 10, then they somehow get stuck in limbo.

There ultimately needs to be something done about people picking less than level 10 characters before higher skilled players.

Response to the petty excuse in "What's up with the servers" response claiming lags are due to overloaded nodes

    Posted: 19 May 2020 03:58 AM PDT

In that post, Hirez basically said nodes are being overloaded. They're making it sound like the problem lies not with them, but on the nodes that are encountering heavier traffic than usual due to general internet use by people all over the world due to the COVID19 quarantine.

I don't buy their excuse though.

Let's say these "nodes" are "roads", internet traffic is car traffic, and online games are buses.

I don't exactly know how they configured these nodes so let's put two scenarios:

    • If Nodes work like public highways,
      • How come Paladins' bus is moving waaaay slower than the other buses in the same traffic? I personally play Archeage, Albion Online, Mabinogi Mobile, World of Tanks alongside Paladins, and all those games are business as usual.
        • The problem here lies with Paladins' bus moving slower in comparison.
    • If Nodes work like private roads only used by Hirez alone,
      • How come Paladins' private road is so crude that it cannot accommodate a slight increase in traffic? It's as if they're really cutting costs on Paladins and are moving all their funding to their next flop of a game: Rogue Company.

    ---

People. Just because they tell us the behind the scenes of their attempts at fixing their problems doesn't mean we should forgive them already. Wait for their fixes to actually work before we forgive them of their sins to this overly patient playerbase.

    ---

    Important UPDATE:

In addition, I consulted a programmer friend of mine and he basically came to one conclusion:

    Paladins has potatoes for servers.

Expounding further...Yeah, this means they need to expand their server clusters. It's like road traffic. Congestion is basically what's happening since there are a lot more users in the network. They need more servers to have more routes. Otherwise, routes will get easily more congested which will lead to more delays for everyone

Yes...even if you had god-tier internet speed, you're still at the mercy of the routes and their congestion levels

WASTED BATTLE PASS DUE TO SERVER ISSUES

    Posted: 18 May 2020 09:27 PM PDT

Amidst the current server issues plaguing Paladins, there is an issue that must be addressed: Battle Pass time limit

Right now, the servers are all messed up, yet the battle pass timer keeps ticking down.

I bought the battle pass under the expectation that I would be able to play Paladins during this COVID-19 quarantine. Right now though, it is near impossible to play comfortably. How do they expect us to grind a lengthened battle pass when the servers are like this?

The most they have done is post excuses, claiming that they have fixed the servers and that we should send in match ids for tech support for any further cases as if the lagging match are to be considered the minority. It's not. Nearly all matches are lagging.

People say that the covid-19 quarantine is the reason why the servers cannot be fixed. Such an excuse is pitiful. IT are considered to be required professions so they still have work amidst the quarantine.

    ---

Hirez needs to fix the servers.

    Failing that,

    They need to provide refunds.

    Failing that,

They need to extend the current battle pass while delaying the next battle pass release.

If they do not do any of these compensations to paying customers, this would be the last purchase I will ever make on Paladins as I cannot trust them to deliver the products and services in an acceptable state -- or at least for the products to not degrade rapidly over such a short duration.

I encourage others to no longer buy any purchase any Hirez products as well.

Yes...even if you had god-tier internet speed, you're still at the mercy of the routes and their congestion levels

There's also the factor of routing algorithms

Which direct traffic, but unlike our traffic enforcers, the algorithms direct the packets to better routes if they are available

Well...supposedly they should do that :)) we were taught the concept of "shortest path" in college

    Doing Battle Pass challenges hurt

    Posted: 18 May 2020 10:33 PM PDT

I can't be the only one who is feeling tired and burnt out while doing these, especially the Strix and Khan ones, right? Like, I know I got a lot of time, loads of it with being inside all day, but... man, it just isn't fun when playing now, even if I just mainly do Onslaught Training to hope there's a Furia or Viktor on the enemy team. And even then, I just hope I manage to get the killing blow sometimes and that it doesn't get sniped or something. Just... I can't wait until I get all these over with, because it made the game unfun for me, and I'm too stubborn to put them off until later.
