Been playing Paladins since early 2016 on the original launcher. I'm honestly amazed they kept it up this long. Still a little sad to see it go.

Cracking the Code: What is Vora?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:23 AM PST

I've played 51 levels of Vora, my gold Vora is here:

    https://imgur.com/SH3SyTc

Like many people playing this champ, at first I struggled with her identity. She has a strange kit and playstyle that is not a traditional flank. Some of her oddities that don't fall in line with other flanks are as follows:

    • She only has a single burst skill, which is Obliterate. It is also close range and meant to be a finisher. Most other flanks have capabilities that let them bypass Obliterate (e.g. Zhin counter, Drox Reversal, or just being an airborne Maeve).
    • Her damage is based on DoT/Poison, which gives enemies time to retaliate against her.
    • Because of the above, she is a relatively poor duelist against other flanks.
    • Her redeeming trait is that she has some of the highest mobility in the game with double vine.

I had questions in the beginning on why she was designed this way. Looking at her lore (why we are talking about this will make sense later), she was a member of Io's worshippers and a guardian. After some kind of conflict where her group was slaughtered and their prayer's to Io did nothing to manifest any kind of help, as the lone survivor she freed the darkness and changed allegiances.

She is a shadow, a betrayer, and a backstabber that was once a shrine guardian. Trying some new things, I started playing Vora differently. Not as a traditional flank (which will just get you killed) but instead as a bodyguard.

What I mean by this is that, when the match starts I look at the enemy team's composition as well as my own team and determine who will be the first engagers.

If we have a pocket healer like a Jenos and another flank, I know that our other flank is going in. If the enemy team is flank heavy and say we have a Furia or Io, I know the enemy team is going to beeline to our healer so I stay back and watch the support.

I remain in the shadows, using my mobility to get me a vantage on where the first fight is going to happen. As soon as the combat starts, I third wheel the fight. With as fast as I can get around the map I can imbalance any combat encounter and heavily increase the chance for a win and snowball kills.

If my flank is rushing on the dredge, as soon as my flank starts shooting I'm suddenly behind that dredge blowing him up. If an enemy flank pounces on the support, I am there joining the support to force a peel then I'll hunt down that damaged flank and kill them.

Vora is a shadow, she needs to be tethered to other teammates. Her goal is to make every fight unfair. She can be anywhere and everywhere at once with Relentless Pursuit. As my team attacks I can support from midrange then immediately get behind the target. I have adopted several rules on Vora:

    • Be a shadow, find a teammate to anchor to and let them lead. Once the fight starts, jump behind the target from around or above and imbalance the fight.
    • Never duel or fight alone. When caught solo, escape. Ult if you have to get out and end early to save charge. Vora is a creature of opportunity.
    • Never be the initiator unless you have to. Getting in the crosshair of any hitscan from range without a vine will get you killed.
    • Be hyper aware of your teammate's positions. Join their fights, don't start your own.
    • The only time to break the rules is to get to a sniper your team can't reach and is pinned by, this is a disadvantageous position for Vora but sometimes the only option. This is especially true when all snipers outside of Kinessa (who sometimes gets luckshots) are very good at killing Vora if they see her coming. Sha-Lin is the most dangerous. If forced to hunt snipers, always attack from above. If they are aiming up, they can't get easy shots on you then easily recorrect to attack your teammates.

After I've adjusted my playstyle to better fit this, my experiences with her have greatly improved. She is not a traditional flank that can just dive or lead the attack due to being able to easily self-sustain, counter, or invul. She is not a duelist that is going to win fights when you meet the enemy flank on an isolated lane. She is however, the perfect imbalancer. She's the last thing you want to see when your already fighting someone because you didn't see her coming. She's what kills you when you thought the enemy support was an easy pick.

How do you people play Paladins everyday or is this a me thing ?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:57 PM PST

Ever since I started my Paladins experience has been abysmal. The game always felt clunky and the quality of the games was always piss poor where I was happy that I got 60 bombs but it turns out I was getting those because I was using overpowered console champs and the other team was either bots or new players who were running weak counters to koga or zhin.

Now that I've been playing for 2 years all I feel is pain and frustration, these new and current players are so bad and play the game as if they only play for their own fun and don't care about the team. In casuals such as tdm, onslaught, siege all I get is insta pick dps players who are bad but they don't care or see it that way. In ranked I get people who simply don't care and will play how they want and will approach the game like a tdm and just go for kills. No one knows how to draft or strats or that every map is played differently. Maybe it's because of my server and the place I live but all I get is toxic hispanic players who just talk shit and do whatever they want, with no concern for how their teammates feel. Before you cancel me for being "racist" I am hispanic and know what they are saying in spanish so I know that they are being homophobic and just overall toxic.

That's not to say I am a saint or will turn the cheek and allow these players to say whatever they want for backlash, I'm far from being a good person but I try, I try to be a good teammate and to take deep breathes with the draft, the game. I get it not every game will be a satisfying win, but in my experience I won't have a good time unless I'm playing with players of my skill level and understanding of the game. Every time I solo queue I get the same horrible people who simply don't care about their teammates and will play whatever they want, whether it will be a detriment to team or not. Some of you may never know or have experienced this but this is the my cold hard truth. I'm not exaggerating or venting on here for the sake of letting out my anger over one match. This is an accumulation of anger, disappointment and being let down by these devs who "care about the game".

Our community manager doesn't even play the game she works for. She empowers these players because she sets an example of what a person who plays this game should be like. Maybe I'm wrong and if I am I will admit it but having her as a community manager is bad because I would want someone who actually loves and plays the game and represents the unheard loyal player base of this game instead of those new ones who don't know how to play the game and just pay money for these new battlepass skins that are all glimmer and glamour. I also have a problem with the devs and how they address the meta, they go about it so slow and make buffs and nerfs according to how they see things instead of what the majority of the player base is pleading like taking forever to address the hitscan meta with viktor, vivian and the two shot snipers. That's why rarely anyone is interested in the pro scene of the game because not only did they kill it but they made the games boring because everything is so predictable, the comps are centered around the strong or overpowered hitscan meta. I feel bad for the pro players that are forced to play the game in this taste just to make a few bucks.

As my last point it's how the social media side of the game doesn't advertise the pro scene more or their discord. In the game they have this little panel of information at the bottom left where they advertise their battlepass, merch and other useless news like the chests that are back with 2-3 year old skins. They could add the link to the pro scene website or link to twitch when matches are live. As for the Social media side they just post and don't respond to fair criticism and valid backlash of their games from people who actually care about the game and ask the right questions because they love this game like I do. We are not ok with the current state of the game, they can't use the covid 19 excuse because they have been slacking on content for years, they have cut the budget of the pro scene and only focusing on making their ridiculous bp with 120 levels and 8 skins, 4 new and 4 recolored along with other content that no one wants. The mvp poses are just the emotes they make. Most of the sprays and other in game content no one uses. The chests are all a collection of old skins and they make a new skin every other battle pass it seems.

We want actual transparency of where the game is heading not this pr roadmap 2021 shit that doesn't even address what the players want and then they act like they are listening to players by adding bs questions that isn't priority number 1 for the players. We want to hear the truth to what is the future for the game, so we can stick around for the faint hope they give or if we should jump ship and move on to another game because the devs and former devs ruined such a promising game that will inevitably die like all the other games Hi-rez has made.

I wouldn't complain as much and even let some things slide if their discord was as good as other games. To search for players to meet and play with there is only the looking for group part instead of splitting that up into looking for group-casuals, looking for group-ranked, and making other sub parts for pc or console, and region. Everything in the Paladins discord is all clumped up and it's hard to find people to play. That's not even mentioning that the social media side doesn't let new players or old players that they even have a pro scene, a discord, a YouTube channel and other features to follow Paladins content.

2 easy ways to fix ranked matchmaking

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 03:39 PM PST

Right now, it seems like the matchmaking algo they're using is focused on balancing the average team ranks.

    1. Restrict the overall range in ranks on a team. For example, if you introduce a 3 rank maximum range - if the highest ranked player is Diamond, then the lowest ranked player should only be Gold. This obviously prevents people from having games where GMs have Silver teammates, which is great for both the GM and the Silver. It's not only frustrating for the GM, but also unfair to the Silver to be dropped into a high elo game.

    2. Force the top and bottom picks between the two team to have the same ranks. There are tons of lobbies where top pick on one team is GM, top pick on the other team is only Diamond, and so to try to balance the average rank, the game will stuff a bunch of much lower ranked players with the GM, and slightly higher ranked players on the Diamond player's team. But most of these games are unbalanced in the GM player's favor still, especially if it's a GM/Masters duo. When top pick on the other team is ranked lower than both top picks on the first team, the game feels almost impossible to win.

That's it. Increase the maximum timer from 5.5 minutes to 10 minutes if these 2 steps can be achieved.
