    Pip is the last of the "first" champions who hasn't recieved a visual update.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:24 PM PST

    Pip has been in the game for ages now, using his current model from Closed Beta all the way up to 2020. Compared to all the other champs in the game, Pip looks fairly dated and could use a touch-up. Not only that, but his weapon and some aspects of his appearance scream Sci-Fi moreso than Fantasy, which is a remnant of old Paladins before the game had a large art direction shift into the Fantasy visuals we know today.

    I did see a post or two saying that Pip's future skins would have updated and improved fur, but what about base Pip? While the Viktor update got quite a bit of criticism (and Skye's hair), I don't think that's a reason to leave behind a champion with a model from late 2015.

    Every single champion from the initial roster of 8 characters (CB) has had a model update (aside from Fernando who recieved texture updates, his model has aged very well). These consist of;

    • Barik
    • Buck
    • Cassie
    • Fernando
    • Grohk
    • Pip
    • Ruckus
    • Skye

    The only outlier is Pip, who has yet to recieve much of anything.

    While I understand the hesitation to visually rework older beloved characters due to possible negative feedback, the divide in quality between Pip and a character like Raum or Tiberius is ridiculous. Hi-Rez's other title SMITE shares a similar problem with quality. While they have reworked Isis in recent months, there are still very bottom-tier models like Ares, Athena, Cupid (etc...) that pale in comparison with newer gods.

    The Viktor update was met with a large chunk of criticism and a lot of people miss the old Viktor, but I don't necessarily think the model itself is bad - it's simply the direction that deviates from the soviet-esque footsoldier that old Viktor embodied. Most of the reworks of the original cast listed above are some of the best reworks in the game, such as Barik and Ruckus.

    Perhaps one way that another Viktor situation could be avoided is by presenting the concept phase of a Pip model update to the community first, asking for feedback and criticism to gain a general idea of community reception when the rework is in its early phase. Riot games has done something similar with two characters from League of Legends - Volibear and Fiddlesticks. While Riot is a bigger company with more resources, the community interaction was great and in a later dev-blog came to the conclusion that Volibear players were not a fan of the eldritch horror direction they wanted to take. This caused the dev team to revert back to the more familiar style of Volibear before moving forward beyond the concept phase, taking community criticism and ideas into account.

    I think having something to be surprised at is nice and all, but in previous updates having something suddenly sprung onto the community without any interaction or warning has proven to be a coin flip of "good or bad" - such as the VGS update.

    I hope the EM team updates Pip, as he is in need of love. Perhaps give him a skin down the line too... ;)

    ~~

    Here are a couple of honorable mentions of other characters who could use minor or major visual reworks (IMO);

    • Evie: While I didn't mention her in the previous list of champion updates, Evie did come out shortly after the first 8 - IIRC early december. While her outfit is good, her face isn't that great and a Barik style update could serve her well.
    • Drogoz: While not the first, Drogoz is also an older champion (released just after Ying). While his visual aesthetic is cool, his design could use a little touch-up to bring it to modern standards. Nothing major, but a little clean-up.
    • Sha'Lin: In a similar vein to Evie, Sha'Lin suffers from having a slightly less than attractive face. Again, a visual update that maintains his primary visual themes and fixes up the issues with his face would help a lot. Perhaps add in some visual elements shared with Zhin/Koga to represent his prior affiliation with The Thousand Hand's guild.
