The state of Paladins, by the numbers, and going into 2021

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:28 AM PST

As of today, 11/16/2020 Paladins has amassed a roster of 46 champions as of the Pact of Vora update. Each champion has 3 configurable talents, giving rise to 138 unique play styles in comparison to other hero shooters where champions may have a fixed loadout.

Overwatch currently has 32 champions selectable, all with fixed loadouts.

As of today, steam tracks an average of 16,000 players on Paladins.

    https://steamcharts.com/app/444090

According to resources on steam, a multiplayer shooter game must maintain an audience of 1,000 - 2,000 with those on the low end stabilizing or experiencing a rising trend to stay relevant.

As of today the latest entries of in the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises remain relevant at those numbers:

https://steamcharts.com/app/1238810 (BF1 trends used due to BFV not being available on steam)

It is safe to say, Paladins is highly successful and will not be going anywhere for a long time. Paladins is also featured as a second page entry on Playercounter.com.

Playercounter clocks Overwatch at 800,000 players -which makes it a success unicorn in the genre and the byproduct of highly successful IP marketing and a "perfect storm." It is interesting that Overwatch's last released hero, Echo, came out in April 2020 with no new champions released since.

In Paladins Tiberious was released on January, 2020. Following this Corvus was released in April, 2020. In October we received Vora.

Following the release of the latest updates, Realm Leaks has already datamined a new champion that is in a near finished state following the on the heels of Vora's release -indicating that the cadence of a new champ every 2-3 months is holding true for the game.

Paladins releases new champions at a rate of almost 2.5x the speed of overwatch -and with playstyle customizations. This is at a fraction of the budget as Overwatch, which has exponentially more players.

The game has the highest level of player choice possible out of any hero shooter, with 2021 possibly seeing the roster breach 50 playable champions.

While there are bugs (which is to be expected when over 46 champions with customizable play styles clash), all of the champions are serviceable and capable of decent play in casual games.

Very few weapon archetypes are missing from paladins and all skill levels/ceilings are supported. New players can find success on user friendly characters like Viktor that still remain competitive in high level play.

Based on the above this is what 2021 will look like for Paladins:

1.) Paladins will enjoy a high degree of success as the most popular hero shooter under Overwatch, which is unreachable due to its extreme cultural impact.

2.) Paladins will continue to release champions at an aggressive rate, offering more playstyle choices than Overwatch. 50 champions will be selectable within the roster by 2021.

3.) Paladins will continue to be supported by streamers, esports, and professional players well into 2021 and beyond.

4.) Paladins has no risk of game death for the near future based on the current player counts.

5.) The aggressive release of champions and support of new playstyles is the biggest contributor to the game's relevance, success, and stability. There is a champion for everyone. Esports support is the second. Each new champion release sees a massive uptick of activity that keeps the game going.

6.) My personal opinion is that Paladins is a successful sleeper, much like Warframe. The largest detractor to Paladin's success is lack of marketing and awareness of the game to FPS/MOBA communities, and of course bugs.

7.) As a side note, Paladin's low system spec requirements make it a popular game in third world countries who have limited access to high end computers. This kind of success is also seen in game like Brawlhalla.

I did a social experiment today

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:34 PM PST

I played 10 ranked matches and each time I get in lobby I type in chat "skin boost or afk"

7 out 10 times I got trash talk immediately and people started cursing to which I immediately responded with "fine I'll do it myself" then activated a skin booster and told them it's just a joke

3 out of 10 times people actually started laughing and I did activate a skin booster for them regardless

Out of the 7 matches where people started complaining we won 3 of them

Out of the 3 matches where people were chill and laughing we won all 3 of them

It's amazing how your mood can actually drastically affect your gameplay so my point is

Laugh more people we could all be dead tomorrow so enjoy the little things even if it's just a stupid joke from some random online

Also Vivian suck nerf her more HiRez
